5.5 Gallon Brew Tips and Points

– Boil 7 gallons of water to start
– Approx. 3 gallons for mash and the remainder for sparging
– Water temperature should be around 154 degrees F.
– Raise temp to 158 degrees F in pot and pour in mash tun
– That leaves 4 degrees above when adding the grist
– Do iodine test on wort – should not be black but reddish brown or brown
– When adding wort to boil pot, shoot for the 6.5 gallon mark
– After adding wort to boil pot, check level for 6.5 gallons – add water if below
– The boil should bring the level back down to 5.5 gallons
– Do a test on the wort chiller to make sure it does not leak
